Ex-prisoner sneaks back into prison
A former convict has appeared in court after sneaking back into jail
for eight hours, where he chatted and smoked cigarettes with inmates.
Convicted sex offender Matthew Matagrano, 36, of Yonkers, New York
City, appeared before a judge in Manhattan accused of impersonating a
department of correction investigator.
Matagrano used fake credentials for a week to get into several city
prisons, including Rikers Island and the Manhattan Detention Centre.
According to a criminal complaint describing Matagrano’s entry into
the Manhattan jail, giving cigarettes to inmates and smoking with them
in a common area.
When questioned, Matagrano admitted to arriving at the jail at around
3.30pm,before showing a gold shield and saying he was an investigator
from the department’s intelligence unit. He stayed until 11pm.
It was not clear if or when Matagrano would face similar charges for entry into other city jails.
The 36-year-old’s criminal record includes a conviction for sodomy
and sexual abuse and he is on the state’s sex offender register.
It is not clear why he wanted to get into jails, but he had
previously been caught posing as a board of education worker to get into
two schools and search through student files. In 2004, he pleaded
guilty to attempted burglary in connection with that case.
Matagrano also faces charges of burglary, possession of forged
instruments, larceny and promoting prison contraband. He is accused of
stealing a radio from an office while inside.
He is due back in court on Wednesday. The trial continues.
