189 people wounded in Egypt clashes

CAIRO, March 3 (KUNA) -- At least 189 people were injured on Sunday in clashes between protesters and security forces in Port Said in northeast Egypt, according to medics.

No fatality was reported from the site of the clashes, which took place before the Port Said Security Directorate, the chief of the Health Ministry's emergency department, Khaled Al-Khateeb said.


Those injured were transferred to several hospitals in Port Said for necessary medical treatment, he added.

Relatives of prisoners - convicted or facing charges for involvement in Port Said's 2012 football disaster - attacked Sunday the Egyptian Canal city's security directorate after learning the inmates would be transferred to an unknown location.

They irate people threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at the building and got engaged in clashes with policemen there.

On 26 January, Port Said criminal court sentenced 21 out of 73 defendants to death for their involvement in a football riot that killed more than 70 Ahly fans in February 2012. (end) asm.mt KUNA 032151 Mar 13NNNN
