A woman has given birth in a New York zoo, right next to a bear enclosure.
The baby girl was born on a wildlife path at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse on Friday (December 7) and delivered with the aid of zookeepers.
Zoo educator Liz Schmidt told The Post-Standard that she rushed over from the reindeer pen to find a 21-year-old woman in labour.
Schmidt recalled the dramatic events: "I honestly didn't expect her to deliver at the zoo. I thought we'd pop her in a wheelchair and she'd be good to go to the hospital."
Other zoo workers gathered blankets to keep the mother and baby comfortable.
"As I came on the scene, the baby was pretty much on its way out," explained fellow zookeeper Sarah Kohler. "Our main concern was to keep the mum and baby warm."
Shortly after the mother had given birth, the ambulance arrived and took the newborn and mother to a nearby hospital.
Director of the zoo Ted Fox said that they will send a present to the mother, baby and their family.
"I'm sure it will be animal-related," Fox joked. "It's certainly been a bumper crop at the zoo for babies. It's following suit with the human species."
