The Uk's first atheist church is set to hold its first monthly service in London tomorrow (January 6).

The church, based in Canonbury, Islington, has been founded by comedians Pippa Evana and Sanderson Jones, who came up with the idea together.

Gawker reports that Jones describes the service as "part atheist church" and "part foot-stomping show", and that the pair "just want people to feel encouraged and excited when they leave".

The inaugural lecture will feature guest lecturer Andy Stanton, author of the Mr Gum children's books.

The church has already met with controversy - a Catholic parish priest from nearby Finsbury told reporters that while it was "important" for non-believers to be engaged with faith, "for them to establish a church like any other religious denomination is going too far. I'm cautious about it".

According to the Islington Gazette, around one third of the population of the borough don't believe in God.
